The Mullayanagiri Trek:

The Mullayanagiri trek begins at the Sarpadhari bus stop, which stays connected to Chikmagalur by road. Thus it is an accessible place since it is easier to visit from Chikmagalur.  

Though there are few stubborn slopes, the actual trek is pretty easy and adventurous. Since the trails go through serpentine forest trails, there’s a high chance of a close encounter with the wildlife. The whole trek will be an experience in itself and will have you obsess about it for a long time even after the completion

The main highlight of the trek is the walking across the Blade Ridge; A dangerous slope on one side and a cliff on the other, which makes it an experience like you’re walking on a blade’s edge.

Mullayanagiri trek has its name originated from the tomb of Saint Mulappa swammy which can be located at the peak. This add on as another element that makes this trek one of the favored places to visit 

The saint is assumed to have meditated in the hollows surrounding this hill.


If camping is something that excites you, that is an activity that can be done here. One can camp overnight at Mullayanagiri and enjoy the beautiful views. However, the place gets very windy and there are no permanent toilet facilities available here

Most suitable time to visit Mullayanagiri Hills:

Ideally from September to February, that is after the monsoon, will be the best time to trek on Mullayanagiri. Fog, Rain can make the trail slippery and thus making the trek difficult

How to approach Sarpadhari, the origin spot of the trek:

The distance between Chikmagalur and Bangalore by road is about 242 km.

Sarpadhari is the starting point of the trek, which is 15 km away from Chikmagalur. This town is located in the foothills of the Mullayanagiri range and is well connected to the major cities of Karnataka by Bus.Hire a jeep or take a local bus to Sarpadhari, once you reach Chikmagalur.

If you are driving from anyplace in Karnataka, next once you enter Chikmagalur, use the road towards Baba Budangiri. As you arrive at a place called Kamara, turn to the left. Next, you come across a Y Intersection. To proceed toward Mullayanagiri peak, you need to take the left cut here. After about half a kilometer drive on this route, lookout for a small arch on the left, which will be Sarpadhari the starting point of the trek. Most tourists touring this town in South India do not skip the Mullayanagiri peak, one of the most significant places to visit in Chikmagalur.
